Pol Chambost was born in 1906 in Saint-Etienne. He trained at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués à l’Industrie in Paris but also attended evening classes at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. At 26, he turned to ceramics and began a culinary and decorative production. He is the first in France to use a large electric furnace. In 1942, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes, section Arts Appliqués. At that time, his studio in Ivry sur Seine had 5 employees. Production was divided between decorative and utilitarian ceramic. He already works with department stores such as Bon Marché, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. From 1944, he collaborated with many ceramists such as Pierre Fouquet, Paul Pouchol, Georges Jouve, Louise-Edmée Chevallier and Pierre Roulot, in 1949. It is he who will supply in advertising ashtrays the major brands of the time: Simca, Cinzano, Dubonnet, Dop-L’Oréal… From 1948, he participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers for several years. The 50s will be synonymous with success! His workshop is expanding, the clientele is internationalizing, he participates in many shows including the 1st Commercial Exhibition of Art Workshops which will then become the Salon Maison et Objets. His production is flourishing and he deposits many models and techniques because Pol Chambost is an artist but also an outstanding technician.
